Police Confiscate £50,000 Worth of Illicit Cigarettes and Vapes

In a coordinated effort to combat illegal activities, officers in Leyland conducted Operation Centurion, responding to tips from the public. Four stores were visited, resulting in the seizure of 3,227 illicit goods and approximately £5,000 in cash. The combined value of these products, if sold as genuine, would have amounted to nearly £50,000.

Inspector Mike Moys, part of South Ribble’s neighborhood policing team, emphasized their commitment to enhancing community safety. By acting on information provided by residents, law enforcement aims to address activities that often contribute to anti-social behavior in the surrounding areas.

Dawn Robinson from Lancashire County Council acknowledged the collaborative efforts of Trading Standards and the police in seizing illegal goods from Leyland shops. She highlighted the detrimental impact of the sale of cheap illicit tobacco and illegal vapes, particularly to children. These activities not only foster addiction but can also serve as a gateway to other illicit substances. Moreover, the sale of illegal products poses financial challenges to legitimate businesses and impacts the overall health and well-being of communities.

Robinson urged the community to report any knowledge of businesses engaging in such illegal activities to Trading Standards through the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline at 0808 2231133.

Operation Centurion represents a comprehensive countywide initiative targeting anti-social behavior, led by Lancashire Constabulary and supported by Police and Crime Commissioner Andrew Snowden. This aligns with Snowden’s Fighting Crime Plan, prioritizing a robust response to anti-social behavior with collaboration from partner agencies.
