New Research Links E-Cigarette Use to Increased Asthma Risk in Teens

A recent study conducted by the Texas A&M University School of Public Health suggests that e-cigarette use may raise the risk of asthma in adolescents who have never smoked traditional tobacco products.

The research utilized data collected from 2015 to 2019, involving over 3,000 teenagers aged 13 to 17 in Texas, and compared it with data from over 32,000 teenagers across the United States.

The study surveyed participants on their history of e-cigarette use, the number of traditional cigarettes smoked in the past 30 days, and whether they had previously experienced asthma. It also considered factors such as gender, age, ethnicity, and other substance use, including traditional cigarettes, alcohol, and illicit drugs.

The findings revealed a correlation between e-cigarette use and asthma in adolescents who had never used traditional tobacco products, suggesting that e-cigarettes increase the risk of asthma in teens, irrespective of their use of conventional tobacco products.

The study also found evidence that certain demographic factors, substance use behaviors, and the presence of depressive symptoms were associated with e-cigarette use, with adolescents who used traditional cigarettes, alcohol, and other substances being more likely to use e-cigarettes. Those with depression were also more likely e-cigarette users.

Dr. Taehyun Roh, the study’s lead author, emphasized the importance of increasing our understanding of the harmful effects of e-cigarette use and implementing stricter guidelines to reduce its prevalence.

This research serves as a warning that e-cigarette use, particularly among adolescents who have not previously used traditional cigarettes, may bring unexpected health risks. It reminds us that e-cigarettes are not a harmless alternative, and further attention and research are needed to understand their potential health impacts.
