The study, encompassing data from over a million patients across four continents, has been published in the journal “Nature Genetics.”
Professor of Genetics, Joel Gelernter, expressed, “The idea behind this study is that as cannabis use becomes more prevalent, it is essential to understand the risks associated with the dysregulation leading to addiction, with the aim of developing pharmaceutical therapies to address this issue.”
Known adverse health effects of cannabis addiction include a susceptibility to addiction itself, with over one-third of cannabis addicts being more prone to dependency compared to non-addicts. Additionally, more than one-third of cannabis users are at risk of addiction, contributing to negative health outcomes.
These consequences encompass impaired cognitive function, diminished work efficiency, and an increased risk of accidents while under the influence.
Genetic analysis incorporated data from 154,365 individuals, comprising 886,256 from Europe, 123,208 from Africa, 38,289 of mixed American descent, and 6,843 from Asia. The comprehensive study sheds light on the intricate interplay between genetics and cannabis addiction, providing valuable insights into the potential health repercussions associated with increased cannabis use.
