This information was reported by media company EgyptianStreets. on May 31, World No Tobacco Day, the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics issued a press release reporting a decrease in the number of smokers in the country. in 2020 this percentage was 17.3%, compared to 16.8% now, a decrease of half a percentage point.
While the decline appears to be relatively small, it is still encouraging. Until last year, Egypt was one of the countries that banned e-cigarettes, and a ban enacted in 2011 deprived the country’s smokers of a smoking cessation tool that multiple studies have shown is the most effective on the market today.
It would be interesting to see how the number of smokers is decreasing month by month in order to check if the recent e-cigarette mandate has played a role in the decrease in the number of smokers. Unfortunately, this information has not been reported in press releases or by media outlets.
