Birmingham City Council Declares Effective Bankruptcy as it Faces £760m Bill

Birmingham City Council has officially announced its declaration of bankruptcy following the substantial £760m bill it received to settle equal pay claims.

The council has taken the measure of issuing a section 114 notice, which mandates an immediate halt to all non-essential spending, except for the protection of vulnerable individuals and essential statutory services.

In a statement acknowledging its financial distress, the local authority emphasized its commitment to imposing stricter spending controls and entrusting them to the section 151 officer to ensure thorough oversight.
